Driven by the technical improvements brought to internal combustionenginesandthe ramp-upof electrifiedvehicles, trendof CO 2 emissionsof sold vehicles in 2019 is in line with Groupe PSA targets.

By 2021,50%of the vehiclesproposedby the Groupworldwidewill be availablein electric or plug-in hybrid version. In 2025, 100% of models marketed will includean electrifiedversion. The Group’s massive R&D investmentpolicy aims to improve air quality and reduce greenhouse gas emissions (€1,060 millionto developpowertrainsin 2019). This approachis in synergywith the preventionof climaterisks described in 4.5.2.1. The Diesel ParticulateFilter (DPF): 2.2.1.2.1. the only effectivetechnology to remove fine and ultrafineparticulates underall driving conditions Groupe PSA identifiedthe needto tackleparticulatepollutionin the late 1990s, and introduceda new generationof diesel HDi engines into the market. These have cut particulate emissions by 60% comparedto the previousgeneration(to 100mg/kmfrom the HDi engines, compared to 250mg/kmin earlier versions). The Group subsequently equipped its engines with a high-performance filtration technology, called “DieselParticulateFilter”(DPF). The DPF effectivelyscreensout both fine and ultra-fineparticulate matter: 99.7% by number and more than 95% by mass (source Agency for the Environmentand Energy Management- ADEME: particulateand NO x emissionsby road vehicles– May 2018).In the late 1990s, particulate emissions plummeted from more than 3,500,000 particulates per cm 3 in an unfiltereddieselengineto less than 3,500 particulates per cm 3 in a dieselenginewith a particulate filter. The DPF removes particulatesin all driving conditions. The DPF is a mechanicalsystem, whichis fully operationaland effective throughoutall phasesof engineoperation– load,warmengine/cold engine,urban/motorway driving – even when the filter isfull. A diesel enginefittedwith a particulatefilter emits less particulate matterthana latestgenerationdirect-injectiongasolineengine,with particulateemission levels significantlylower than the thresholds required under current regulations(20 times less in mass, up to 100 timesless innumber). The particulatefilter has beenfittedas standardacrossthe Group’s diesel models since 2010, and has been mandatoryin all vehicles sold since the introductionof the Euro 5 regulationfor all types (January 2011). In 2019,dieselvehiclesequippedwithDPFaccountedfor 95%of the Group’s total diesel vehicle sales worldwide, comparedto 91% in 2018and37%in 2009.

PRESERVING AIR QUALITY  DPEF.16

2.2.1.2.  DPEF.18   DPEF.36

Being proactive in the debate concerningmobility-relatedpublic health and environmental issues, Groupe PSAhas incorporatedthe issue of air quality into its researchand developmentprogrammes for many years now. This has enabled it to roll out engines and technologies across its rangesthat drastically reduce: particulate emissions: inventor of the Diesel Particulate Filter n (DPF),whichGroupe PSAbegansellingin 2000,more than nine years before Euro 5 standardswhich made it compulsoryfrom September 2009. Since2017,theGasolineParticulateFilter(GPF) hasbeenalsoappliedfor Gasoline Direct Injection engines; nitrous oxide emissions: Groupe PSA is the first car manufacturer n to haveoptedto roll out the SCR (SelectiveCatalyticReduction) solution, reducing nitrogen oxide emissionsby up to 95% and marketedsince 2013 on its Euro 6 vehicles. For approvalof its new vehicles in Europe, Groupe PSAcommittedto meet a NO x conformityfactor in RDE of less than 1 (excludingmeasurement dispersion, limited to 0.43,which is the margin value set by the regulation). This commitmenthas been made from 1 September 2017, i.e. threeyearsbefore the 2020 regulatory requirement. The breakthroughtechnologiesto reduce atmosphericpollutants fromGroupe PSAvehiclesare equallyvalid on combustionvehicles andhybridvehicles. The range of solutions to improve air quality also includes the electrificationof vehicles, ranging from micro-hybridationsuch as Stop & Start, and mild hybridation( 48V mild hybrid: additionof a starter-alternatorand a small 48 voltbattery ), up to plug-inhybrid vehiclesthat can be rechargedby the customer,as well as electric “zero-emission” vehiclesusing abatteryor a fuelcell.
