Groupe La Poste // CSR REPORT 2022
Becoming a leading player in the rational management of resources 5 WORKING TO ACCELERATE ENVIRONMENTAL TRANSITION FOR ALL ■
The group also supports the roll-out of the circular economy in the regions through innovative financing solutions . Number one bank lender for local authorities, La Banque Postale has a long record of financing waste sorting and recovery facilities. In 2019, it launched the first green loan offer for local authorities in five areas, including two in the field of the circular economy: sustainable management of water and sanitation, waste management and recovery. These green loans are also available to companies and professionals, intended to finance investments with a positive environmental impact, including projects related to the circular economy: collection, treatment and supply of water; construction or extension of water sewer networks; selective collection and transport of source-sorted waste; composting of biodegradable waste; recovery of materials from waste. To promote the emergence of new sectors in the circular economy or to accelerate their development, La Poste Groupe supports start-up and social and solidarity-based economy structures through several innovation mechanisms initiated by the group (such as the French IoT competition, the La Poste Ventures investment fund, or the intrapreneurship system) or of which it is a partner (e.g. Fondation La France s’engage). The support can take several forms: organisation of experiments, development advice, partnership, solidarity fundraising involving employees, skills sponsorship missions, etc. 5.4.3 Managing water consumption Water is one of the resources targeted by the group’s resources and circular economy policy (1) . La Poste does not consume water on an industrial scale, but uses water for sanitary and drinking purposes, for its company restaurants and for watering its green spaces. The only use in a production process is that of the Philaposte printing plant located in Boulazac in the Dordogne. This printing plant is an installation classified for the protection of the environment ( Installation classée pour la protection de l’environnement - ICPE) with a prefectoral decree and a water agreement. Water analyses are carried out daily and weekly for mandatory monthly declarations. The water consumption and water discharges are monitored. La Poste’s water consumption is managed both to control supply risks and to contribute to the management of this common good, both upstream (supplies) and downstream (discharges). La Poste Immobilier has included a project dedicated to this resource in its sustainable real estate policy: “Optimising water management (soil permeabilisation and differentiated rainwater management)”. The group is committed to implementing initiatives to reduce its consumption. Establishments carry out monthly monitoring to detect any leaks. In 2022, La Poste Immobilier conducted an experiment with a service provider, Hydrelis, to improve the search for leaks. Over seven months this approach was tested on 29 sites, resulting in 15,691 cubic metres of water saved and 20,087 cubic metres of leaks avoided. Some examples: ■ Recygo is a partner of the French paper industry . The agreement entails, inter alia , fostering long-term partnerships
with local recycling papermakers and ensuring sufficient supply volumes, to boost the paper recycling and recovery industry in France; ■ La Poste Groupe supports the Capillum start-up , which collects hair from hairstylists to develop the first hair recycling system. Recycled hair has several uses: medical research, netting filtering soil and water pollution, alternatives to plastic mulch for agriculture and gardens. In May 2022, the urban parcel logistics activity (Services-Mail-Parcels business unit) and Capillum entered into a partnership. ■ Every year, intrapreneurial projects led by La Poste employees contribute to the circular economy. The Recy’Clo electric bicycle reconditioning project, launched in mid-2020, has been part of the Nouvelle Attitude subsidiary as a separate activity since August 2022. A project dedicated to the repackaging of retailers’ boxes is being studied. In 2023, three new teams started intrapreneurial adventures with projects with a positive impact on the issue of resources: one on the recycling of bank cards and smart cards, one on the home collection of items to be reused or recycled, one on e-commerce delivery without transport over-packing. La Poste Groupe also contributes to the circular economy by mobilising its customers and employees to address resource issues. A new partner in September 2022 of the fifth edition of the World Cleanup Day, 384 employees of La Poste and its subsidiaries at 34 sites collected more than 2 metric tonnes of waste, including 62,000 butts. In the technical management of buildings, several actions are carried out to control water consumption: adjustment of sanitary flows, installation of aerators, preventive maintenance, dual-flow flushes, etc. La Poste makes its employees aware of eco-gestures, by example in the context of “green lease” initiatives, and imposes efficiency requirements on its service providers (e.g. watering of green spaces, washing of vehicles). Almost all of the water supply comes from the general distribution network managed by local authorities, and several establishments already reuse rainwater for sanitary purposes or green spaces. Particular attention is paid in exceptional situations to avoid causing soil and water pollution: the establishments are prepared to control firewater discharges and fuel leaks. Indirectly, La Poste Groupe’s services contribute to better water management. This is the case, for example, with La Banque Postale’s green loans, which finance, among other things, sustainable water and sanitation management projects. In addition, La Poste Groupe makes its employees and customers aware of water pollution, particularly by waste: partnership since 2018 with the World Cleanup Day France association; partnership since 2023 with The SeaCleaners association.
