Improving climate resilience 5 WORKING TO ACCELERATE ENVIRONMENTAL TRANSITION FOR ALL ■
Reducing emissions from vehicles and transport The Services-Mail-Parcels business unit already has an extensive retail network of post offices, postmen and lockers in France. Its efforts are therefore less focused on the internal network of urban logistics than on the rationalisation carried out on national and regional links. Optimisation actions are supported by: ■ bulk and stowed bulk: load optimisation, via the “stowed bulk” method (1) , increases the number of parcels loaded in the transport units and the carrying amount by approximately 25% compared to a standard bulk load. In 2022, more than 95% of the Parcels business in the Services-Mail-Parcels business unit was carried out using bulk loading. In 2022, already 33% of national connections are bulk handled. The objective is to continue its deployment on regional links. ■ swap bodies: the roll-out of removable containers continued with 1,008 swap bodies at the end of 2022. These containers, which can be placed on trucks, help to optimise transport. The towing vehicle can pull two swap bodies, which makes it possible either to carry out cabotage (drop off one of the boxes at a parcel platform and pick-up another to forward it to the next parcel platform), or to carry more parcels on high-traffic routes. The roll-out of removable containers will cover 75% of national and regional links by 2026; ■ the combination of the use of swap bodies and stowed bulk makes it possible to transport up to 4,500 parcels per route; ■ engine optimisation: the heavy goods vehicles used for the Services-Mail-Parcels business unit’s transport links meet the most recent Euro standards (air quality) on the market. In 2022, over 95% of vehicles providing transport connections are EUR0 6 compliant; ■ optimization of connections : the implementation of the Hub function in the transport organization, along with the modification of plateform competence area, allows for the adjustment of sorting capacities and the optimization of kilometers traveled. In 2022, there was a 19% decrease in kilometers traveled on the national connections scope. In addition to the extension of its regional network, the optimisation of GeoPost/DPDgroup’s national and international connections is based on several axes: ■ bulk cargo loading increasing loading rates and optimising the road network; ■ the deployment of larger means of transport such as double deck trailers (in the United Kingdom and Ireland) or the road trains currently being deployed in Spain and the Netherlands; ■ piggyback transport via swap bodies on trains, particularly in Switzerland. Reducing emissions is a major challenge for the group’s logistics business units as regards both long-distance transport and the first and last mile.
La Poste's commitment to the development of new urban logistics solutions emerged in 2018 with the aim of contributing to the creation of services that make cities quieter and more breathable. In this context, the La Poste Group (60%) and the Banque des Territoires (40%) have formed a joint structure called LUDEV, which offers urban delivery and goods collection services (of all sizes), storage, and professional waste collection (such as cardboard, plastics, wood, etc.). Their approach relies, depending on the case, on consolidation centers located on the outskirts of cities . These centers enable carriers, couriers, retailers, and local authorities to eliminate the need for first and last-mile deliveries by depositing the goods to be distributed in city centers at these platforms. LUDEV collects the goods and organizes deliveries in densely populated urban areas using low-emission vehicles such as electric vehicles, vehicles running on natural gas (GNV) or bio GNV, cargo bikes, etc. With 300 employees, this activity continues to market new offerings, including XL pick-up points and storage solutions, and aims to strengthen the delivery of heavy or bulky goods. The urban logistics solutions for Europe are, for their part, mainly deployed by the GeoPost/DPDgroup business unit , present in 28 countries (including France via Chronopost and DPD France). The business unit operates through the DPD, Chronopost, Seur (Spain), Jadlog (Brazil) and BRT (Italy) brands, combined under a global brand name “GeoPost/DPDgroup”. The business unit will rely on its 148 urban depots and the creation of 107 new urban depots to deliver, by 2025, 350 cities with 100% alternative vehicles. This ambition involves the deployment of more than 15,000 alternative vehicles, 6,700 charging points and 250 urban depots. Policy for the development of urban logistics infrastructure around metropolises La Poste Groupe’s ambition in terms of urban logistics is also reflected in the roadmap for La Poste Immobilier , which aims to commit more than €500 million in long-term investments. New projects are being developed to provide an urban logistics infrastructure network in France’s 22 major cities. La Poste Immobilier thus places itself at the service of the group’s entities to secure strategic positions and manage the real estate bill. Several projects are underway, such as the construction of the Édouard Herriot urban logistics hotel in Lyon, a 30,000-square metre urban logistics building, and the restructuring of the Keller urban logistics space in Paris.
