(1) Refundable advances from European Governments are provided to the Company to finance research and development activities for certain projects on a risk ‑ sharing basis, i.e. they are repaid to the European Governments subject to the success of the project. (2)

The total net fair value of derivative financial instruments increased by €+4,196 million to €-3,523 million (2022: €-7,719 million) as a result of the reduction of the volume of financial instruments and the weakening of the US dollar (see “– Note 37.4: Notional Amounts of Derivative Financial Instruments”).

In 2023, the European Governments’ refundable advances remained stable at €3,856 million (2022: €3,857 million). The allocation of European Governments’ refundable advances between non ‑ current and current presented in the Consolidated Financial Statements ended 31 December 2023 is based on the applicable contractual repayment dates.
